Massive 41,000 LED Installation Lights Up National Gallery in Washington DC

LEDs for years now have been providing artists with a new tool to push artistic boundaries. This is certainly the case at the permanently installed Multiverse exhibit at the National Gallery of Art, in Washington DC. The exhibit, by American artist Leo Villareal, was completed in 2008 and installed in a 200ft channel containing two moving walkways that connected the eastern and western wings of the gallery. The walls and ceilings of the channel are studded by 4,100 LED modules producing brilliant patterns of sweeping bright white light. Each LED module is individually addressed and controlled from a single central computer. A particularly interesting facet of Multiverse is that the patterns on which it runs were designed probabilistically to ensure that it is highly unlikely that a visitor will ever see a repeated pattern.
