The Infinity Bridge Treats Northeast England to Never Ending Light

Spanning the River Tees in north eastern England is the Infinity Bridge, an elegant pedestrian bridge that opened in the spring of 2009. The nearly 800ft bridge is unique during the day, but at night is when it truly comes to life. The British architectural firm Speirs & Major was responsible for designing a lighting scheme that would accentuate the already innovating bridge design. According to Speirs & Major, cool white lights were used to illuminate the asymmetrical arch that suspends the bridge and also completes the mathematical symbol of infinity, which the arche’s reflection in the water completes and for which the bridge is named. The bridge’s piers and decks are illuminated by wash units installed on brackets extending away from the bridge in order to make the wash units unobtrusive. Speirs & Major also designed an LED system along the bridge’s deck that interacts with pedestrians crossing it, thus illuminating and leading the pedestrians across the bridge with light.
